Filipino Methodists Lead Community Recovery After Typhoon
Local congregations in the Philippines have become central hubs for disaster recovery, coordinating relief efforts and providing long-term support.
In the aftermath of Typhoon Maliksi, which struck the central Philippines in early February, United Methodist congregations have emerged as critical anchors for community recovery efforts.
Church as Community Hub
Bishop Ciriaco Q. Francisco reported that more than 30 United Methodist churches in the Visayas region opened their doors as evacuation centers, serving more than 5,000 displaced families. Many churches sustained damage themselves but prioritized community needs.
Long-term Recovery
Beyond immediate relief, the church is coordinating long-term recovery through livelihood restoration programs, school rehabilitation, and trauma counseling. UMCOR has provided grants totaling $750,000 to support these efforts.
"Our churches are not just buildings — they are the heart of the community," said Bishop Francisco. "When disaster strikes, this is where people come, and we must be ready."
