United Methodist Membership in Africa Surpasses 8 Million
Strong growth in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, and Côte d'Ivoire has pushed African membership past a historic milestone.
The United Methodist Church in Africa has reached a significant milestone, with membership across the continent surpassing 8 million for the first time in the denomination's history.
Growth Centers
The Democratic Republic of Congo continues to be the largest center of United Methodist growth, with membership exceeding 5 million. Mozambique and Côte d'Ivoire have also seen substantial increases, driven by church planting initiatives and community development programs.
Impact on Global Church
The growth has significant implications for the denomination's governance structure. African delegates now represent a substantial voting bloc at General Conference, and the continent's bishops have become increasingly influential voices in shaping church policy.
"We are not just growing in numbers — we are growing in our capacity to serve our communities," said Bishop John Yambasu of the Sierra Leone Area. "The church in Africa is vibrant, engaged, and ready to lead."
