What sacraments do United Methodists observe?

United Methodists recognize two sacraments: baptism and the Lord's Supper (also called Holy Communion or the Eucharist). We define a sacrament as an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace, ordained by Christ himself. While other Christian traditions may recognize additional sacraments, United Methodists follow the Protestant understanding that only these two were directly instituted by Jesus and commanded for all believers.

Baptism

Baptism is the sacrament of initiation into the body of Christ—the church. Through baptism, we are incorporated into God's story of salvation, received into the covenant community, and marked as belonging to God. United Methodists baptize people of all ages, including infants, and accept any mode of baptism: sprinkling, pouring, or immersion. We believe baptism is primarily a sign of God's grace working in a person's life, not merely a human decision or action.

The Lord's Supper

The Lord's Supper, or Holy Communion, is the sacrament through which we remember and participate in the saving work of Jesus Christ. When we gather at the table, we recall Christ's sacrifice, experience his real presence in the breaking of bread and sharing of the cup, and anticipate the heavenly banquet that awaits us. United Methodists practice open communion—meaning that the table is open to all who love Christ, seek to grow in their faith, and desire to lead a new life of peace and love.

Means of Grace

John Wesley taught that the sacraments are "means of grace"—channels through which God's transforming love reaches us. They are not magic rituals but genuine encounters with the living God, made possible by the Holy Spirit. Wesley encouraged frequent communion, and many United Methodist congregations are recovering the practice of celebrating the Lord's Supper weekly or at least monthly.
