What is the role of a bishop in the UMC?

Bishops hold the highest office of leadership in the United Methodist Church. They are ordained elders who have been elected by their jurisdictional or central conference to a ministry of oversight, spiritual leadership, and administration. In the United Methodist system, the episcopacy is not a separate order of ministry but a particular office within the order of elders.

Election

Bishops are elected by the jurisdictional conferences (in the United States) or central conferences (outside the U.S.). Candidates for the episcopacy are typically experienced clergy who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, theological wisdom, and pastoral skill. Election requires a two-thirds vote of the conference delegates.

Appointment of Pastors

One of the bishop's most important responsibilities is the appointment of pastors to local churches. Working with the cabinet (a group of district superintendents), the bishop discerns the needs of each congregation and the gifts of each clergy person, making appointments that serve the mission of the church. This itinerant system—where pastors are sent rather than hired—is a hallmark of United Methodist polity.

Presiding and Leading

Bishops preside over sessions of the annual conference, ordain new clergy, and provide spiritual leadership for the churches in their area. They also preside at General Conference and jurisdictional conferences, ensuring that the proceedings follow proper order and reflect the values of the church.

Teaching and Advocacy

Bishops serve as teachers of the faith, interpreting the church's doctrine and mission to both the church and the world. Through pastoral letters, public statements, and personal witness, they advocate for justice, peace, and the welfare of all people. The Council of Bishops, which includes all active and retired bishops, meets regularly to provide collective leadership and address issues facing the church and society.
